Gallery Guide (P/T, freelance)—Visitor Experience and Engagement

We seek individuals with a passion for visitor experience and strong knowledge of art history to lead private gallery tours for groups of adults. Our program matches our private tour groups with guides who can accommodate their interests and requests. Guides lead tailored private tours of our collections and special exhibitions, including the upcoming Virgil Abloh: “Figures of Speech, on a freelance basis.


  • Bachelor’s degree in art history or a related field
  • At least two years of professional art museum or teaching experience
  • Demonstrated ability to make scholarly information accessible, accurate, and engaging for our diverse audiences
  • Strong background in art history and a broad interest suitable to an encyclopedic museum (knowledge of ancient Egyptian art and the arts of Asia are particularly desirable)
  • Approachable demeanor and a passion for engaging museum visitors around art
  • Capacity to create educational experiences that enhance visitors' direct encounters with art in a museum setting, using various materials
  • Strong independent research skills and familiarity with standard art historical research resources and methods
  • Computer skills including email, Google Drive, and Google Docs
  • Reliability and ability to communicate clearly about scheduling and attendance

Additional qualifications:

  • Master's degree preferred; current graduate students are welcome to apply
  • Fluency in Spanish, Russian, French, and/or Mandarin is desirable


  • Research and plan gallery tours, working independently and proactively
  • Attend online training sessions for new exhibitions and access shared research materials
  • Communicate collegially with other Museum staff and the Gallery Guide team as needed
  • Incorporate feedback from the Manager of Visitor Engagement and Museum staff, as all tours are evaluated before they are presented to private groups
  • Undergo periodic performance reviews for content, teaching style, and customer service
  • Participate flexibly, experiment with new tour concepts and formats, and try new approaches as the program evolves

Salary: $100 per one-hour tour, commensurate with experience

Schedule: Contract-based; guides are notified of upcoming tour availability and scheduled through Visitor Experience and Engagement staff. Tours primarily occur during Museum hours but may be scheduled outside of regular hours. Guides also attend quarterly, paid training sessions.
