Youth: Gallery/Studio Program

Registration for spring 2022 is now closed. Please check back in August for information about fall 2022.

The Gallery/Studio Program offers fun, challenging studio art courses. Be inspired by professional teaching artists and spend time discussing artworks from our exhibitions, learn new skills and techniques, and create your own art using both new and traditional materials. Classes are available for children, teens, and adults. All levels of experience welcome!

Spring 2022 courses

Ages 6–7
Mixed Media: ArtLab
Saturdays, 10:30 am–12:30 pm
Play, experiment, and explore by combining all sorts of materials to create imaginative artworks. Learn how Baseera Khan brings together objects, pictures, fabric, gold, and more in their inspiring artworks. Make friends, make art, and even make your own materials in this class!

Painting: Connecting Cultures
Sundays, 10:30 am–12:30 pm
Travel across time and space, from ancient Asia to contemporary Brooklyn, to discover what kinds of art people make around the world and what we have in common. We’ll learn the basics of creating shapes, forms, and colors, and take a deep dive into using paint to express ourselves.

Ages 8–10
Sculpture: Pottery and Possibilities
Saturdays, 10:30 am–12:30 pm
Visit our Asian art, Egyptian art, and Arts of the Americas galleries to see how cultures across the world and throughout time have sculpted pots and figures. Learn to use clay, plaster, and wire to build your own creatures, and experiment with different kinds of materials to invent your own ways of making. With inspiration from our collections, the possibilities for your creations are limitless!

Painting and Printmaking: Make Your World Pop
Sundays, 10:30 am–12:30 pm
See how Andy Warhol incorporated culture, color, and new techniques into his Pop art, and explore our galleries to discover how artists reflect the world around them. Develop key painting skills, such as brushwork and color-mixing, as well as block-printing techniques to make artworks that represent what matters to you.

Ages 11–13
Sculpture: The Healing Power of Art
Saturdays, 1:30–3:30 pm
Center healing and caring in your artwork with inspiration from artists Guadalupe Maravilla and Rafael Lozano-Hemmer. Examine how these artists use different materials—such as sand, glass, jugs, textiles, and found objects—then create your own unique sculptures in the studio.

Painting: Portfolio Development
Sundays, 1:30–3:30 pm
Discover new materials and techniques for painting and build your portfolio with artworks that deliver important messages. Explore the themes of power and change on view in The Slipstream: Reflection, Resilience, and Resistance in the Art of Our Time and discover how art can hold space for a variety of emotions, from fear and grief to joy and love. Then, experiment with unconventional materials as you sharpen your knowledge of color-mixing, shading, and proportion.
