A 1902 photograph distributed to retailers shows this desk as originally designed, without the paired lower doors. Whether or not Stickley himself fitted this desk with doors, which were put in shortly after production, the addition is well matched in materials and style to the desk. The simplicity of the rectilinear design and the visible construction conform to Arts and Crafts ideals. Furthermore, the bold decorative elements, such as the copper hardware, evoke the medieval period and the craft guilds admired by the Arts and Crafts movement.
