Table (or stand) rosewood, tripod. Top comprises a rosewood frame made up of four sections and a mahogany disc top (later addition). The frame has an elaborate molded rim and the outer edge is a Y-shaped brace of oak. From the center of the brace hangs an elaborately turned pendant made up of five disc-knobs and an acorn-shaped finial. Each of the three legs begins at the floor with simple pad above which is a three-toed foot curving convexly upward, articulated at various points with foliage, and terminating with an outward scroll and a small bunch of leaves. Above this scroll are a finely carved griffin's head, mouth open and ring suspended from lower teeth. A deeply carved bunch of grapes falls from this ring on to the chest of the griffin. The griffin is winged at the shoulders. Above the griffin's head is a column, turned at the base, fluted in the upper and lower shaft, articulated in the center with a foliage knob, and turned at the top. Between the wings of the three griffins is a central post, which comprises a turned disc, two knobs and a finial articulated with petals above. Is in the rococo revival style, called "Louis Quatorze" by Downing who suggested that such tables "....are not only useful in the drawing room for books, ladies' work, flower baskets etc., but they give an air of feminine taste and occupation, to an apartment without which it is apt to look stiff and solemn." Another similar table, lacking its original top, is in the collection of Jay Cantor. The Brooklyn table, while similar in form with its tripod arrangement and carved griffin's heads, is an aesthetically more successful version, carefully organized and skillfully carved, of these tables.
CONDITION - Marble top replaced by later mahogany top. Old cracks in table top frame near two of the joints. Crack runs through the center of one section, most visible from underneath. Minor chips along the edge of top. Second disc from the top of pendent drop is badly chipped all the way around. Lowest disc chipped on one side. One petal of upward finial of center post is chipped. Small chip on upper turning of column base above one griffin head, inside edge. Two petal tips chipped on one of the foliate knobs of a column, outside edge. Crack runs through wings near joint with central post on two of the griffins. Area of in-fill at proper left wing shoulder of one of the griffins. Old finish crazed and deteriorated in some places.
