Rodin conceived this relief of entwined lovers as one of several decorative pilasters for The Gates of Hell. Around 1900 he reduced and cast it along with several other sections of the pilasters, and in 1916 he ordered this even smaller version cast by the thousands, to sell to raise money for French actors and theater employees.
