Gim Myeong-hui and his better-known brother, Gim Jeong-hui, were scholars, calligraphers, and influential ink painters. The two wrote extensively on the philosophy of education and on painting and calligraphy. Like so many Korean scholar-artists of their time, they looked to China for inspiration: to the Han dynasty (206 B.C.E. – 220 C.E.) for calligraphy, as preserved in carved stone inscriptions, and to the Sung dynasty (960-1279) for painting. Unlike most Korean calligraphers, the Gim brothers actually visited China, accompanying their father to the imperial court in 1822. This album of poetry consists of eight pages, of which only four are shown here. It is signed by Gim Myeong-hui and has three seals (two on the last page and one on the front, which is not shown here) bearing the three names by which he was known. It was standard practice for Korean scholar-artists to adopt creative names in addition to their given names.
