Francis Augustus Silva

American Art

This large-scale watercolor, displayed at the American Watercolor Society’s 1877 annual exhibition, is typical of Francis Silva’s oeuvre in its marine subject matter, crystalline lighting effects, and inconspicuous brushwork. The broken mast on the beach at left makes a subtle allusion to nature’s destructive power in this otherwise placid scene.
