Dressing Room

Walt Kuhn

American Art

On View: American Art Galleries, 5th Floor, The City and the Rise of the Modern Woman, 1900–1945
Dressing Room is typical of Walt Kuhn’s work in its subject of a costumed performer—here, the career chorus girl—and in the expressively exaggerated features and intense colors. The artist, who earned extra income as a stage and costume designer for popular entertainments, was fascinated by such individuals who existed on the margins of society. He invested this figure, wearing heavy makeup and a hard expression, with a direct, unselfconscious sexuality that was still uncommon at this time in art from the United States.
